make cash payments, record cash transactions, or reconcile bank accounts. If the same person is responsible for ALL of these (and it's not you the business owner) be very very very wary. In other words you have to have controls in place to ensure that the invoices/sales receipts being received are real customers and that the invoices being paid are really your vendors. Remember Breaking Bad and Skylar just creating cash receipts for the car wash all day long? Additionally if the same person is responsible for recording the cash transactions the books can say whatever the books need to say vs what actually happened.

You're a one man shop, you took in a boatload of cash for the day. You fill out your deposit slip and take it to the bank where they will “count” it, i.e. run it through a cash counting machine, and give you a receipt that should match your deposit slip. How about a church that has taken a collection? At a minimum 2 people should count & record the cash/check/coins via a form with signatures & dates. This should be given to a 3rd person to deposit into the bank account and the bookkeeper should record the deposit into the accounting software. You see how it is less likely that a few $20’s slip into a pocket with many eyes & hands involved.
